  Sparta. New Perspectives
edited by Stephen Hodkinson and Anton Powell
ISBN 978-1-905125-31-9, paperback, xxvi+427 pp., 2009,

The editors: Stephen Hodkinson has established himself internationally as an authority on the economy and society of Sparta. He is the author of numerous academic articles, and of the volume Property and Wealth in Classical Sparta (CPW/Duckworth, 2000). Anton Powell has played a leading role in the development and co-ordination of Spartan studies. He is the author of Athens and Sparta (1988) and editor of the Classical Sparta (1989). Hodkinson and Powell are also joint editors of The Shadow of Sparta (1994).

The history of Sparta is increasingly seen as important, not only for its own sake but also for understanding Athenian literature and the political history of numerous Greek states. Traditional approaches to Sparta are now being supplemented by contributions from archaeology and the social sciences. The renewed interest in Sparta is international. The volume includes, for the first time, original contributions from most of the world's leading authorities on Spartan history.
